The antiphonal style used in Reflections was a direct result of the the concert name and the Bristol First Presbyterian Church architecture -- mainly that the organ and choirloft are in the back of the sanctuary, and marimba music is so visual that it needs to be watched as well as listened to. Also, the church has wonderful live acoustics. So I set about creating music that "reflects" -- with reverberations from front to back, and musical reflections: imitation, retrograde and inverted musical themes. Concert-goers not only saw projected landscapes featuring reflection, they also heard musical reflections.

Overture: Windblown
Reflections are often totally absent when our
lives are no longer calm mirrors of the Light.

Movement 2: Reflections

Reflections, Reflections,

Reflections on the rivers of my life,

Reflections on the mirrors of my soul,

Troubled waters scatter colors,

Break the image of the whole;

Reflections on the mirrors of my soul.

Movement 4: In a Darkened Mirror

For now we see, as in a darkened mirror,

But shadowed outlines of Divine patterns,

Just blurry outlines filled with yet more questions,

Only questions, Partial answers, Only questions.

This Johnstone painting inspired Mvt. 4, but

it wasn't available for the art show.

Movement 6:  Reflections, Recreated

Although troubled waters of our souls

Shatter reflections of the Whole,

Broken images, scattered colors

Shall be recombined to make Beauty that's new,

Shall be recreated as Beauty that's true;

Then shall reflect Beauty and Truth.

Movement 3: Love Never Ends

Tongues and prophecies fail,

Knowledge withers away,

All await the perfect:

Love never ends.

Movement 5: When I Was a Child

When I was a child, I spoke as a child,

I thought as a child, I understood as a child;

But now that I'm grown, I've put away childish things.

Movement 7:  The Greatest of All Is Love

Our God has given us hope

And deep, abiding faith,

And everlasting love,

But the greatest of all is love.

          Love.
